Legionella – Your Legal Responsibilities
Under health and safety law all employers and persons in control of premises (a landlord for example) have a duty to prevent and/or control the risk of exposure to Legionella including:
- Identify and access any sources of risk
- Prepare a strategy for preventing and/or controlling any risk
- Implement, manage and monitor the above precautions
- Assigning a person to be managerially responsible
A Legionella risk assessment is required by law, under the UK Health & Safety Executive ACoP L8 HSG 274 and the Health and Safety Commission (HSC) regulations. Risk assessments have to be carried out on a regular basis dependent on the health and safety variables. All of our assessments are carried out to UKAS 17020 standards.
Legionella Risk Assessment
With a Legionella risk assessment one of our trained assessors will come to your premises to determine what risk your water system has for being colonised by the Legionella bacteria. They will also look for any factors that could help the bacteria grow, as well as any work or activity associated with the water system that could increase the risk of Legionella. All water systems need to be identified and including Legionella testing, and must be done so by trained personnel.
Following the survey of the premises our qualified and experienced risk assessor will create an extensive report. This report will identify any areas of risk for Legionella, suitable control measures, as well as recommendations should any remedial action be needed in order to meet current legal requirements and standards.
Water Storage Tank Cleaning
We also offer a comprehensive service where we clean and disinfect water tank storage. Unmaintained water tanks can become an ideal breeding ground for Legionella, as the Legionella bacteria thrives in conditions where water systems are allowed to deteriorate. It is a requirement of the HSG274 ACoP L8 that water tanks are inspected, cleaned and disinfected on a regular basis to prevent sediment build up that the bacteria can feed on.
